The Southern US has developed as a premier region for subsidiaries of US-German companies, especially in automotive branch. The so called “German Triangle” around Atlanta connects major German car production plants in the Southeastern USA: BMW in Greenville, SC, VW in Chattanooga, TN and MBUSI in Vance, AL. GM chose Roswell, a small town North of Atlanta as their North American IT Headquarter, providing jobs for more than 1,000 high-tech specialists. Due to Roswell being regularly elected among the 100 best places to live in the US, this decision is making it easy to attract high-skilled employees to follow GM’s call. Porsche North America opened a $100 million dollar headquarter for 400 employees at Atlanta Aerotropolis, a new business district in South Atlanta at Hartsfield Jackson Airport. Porsche’s 26 acre site is also home for Porsche Technical Training Center, and Porsche Customer and Driving Experience Center featuring a 1.6 mile test track and handling circuit.
For Business Logistics & Infrastructure
Metro Atlanta with almost 6 Million inhabitants is the 9th largest US population center and the largest economy of all metro areas in the Southeast region. The city offers a broad cultural diversity and international business possibilities being the cross-road of the Southeast. According to Michael Porter of Harvard University, Georgia’s outstanding infrastructure ranges fourth largest logistic hub in the US with Hartsfield-International Airport, deep-water port facilities close by and an outstanding road and train infrastructure.
Within Aerotropolis it is planned to integrate a new multi-modal transportation terminal with up to six high-speed rail lines that are focusing on probably connecting the business center Atlanta with Chattanooga, Charlotte, Savannah and Birmingham, and with Columbus. Currently the Atlanta-Charlotte line has most funding for studies. The idea is to run the high speed train lines along existing interstate highways. Commuter trains with multiple stops could not compete in feasibility studies so far.

Most of the U.S. population lives in the eastern third of the country, therefore from Atlanta 80% of U.S. consumers can be reached within in two flight hours or within two truckload delivery days. Atlanta is besides Chicago and Dallas one of the three largest inland distribution markets in the US. The Southeast Metro Atlanta Area offers several tax incentives and attracts qualified employees due to being affordable in cost of living combined with a high quality of life. Metro Atlanta educates in 57 colleges and universities more than 250,000 students each year, and in 7 specialized technical colleges enroll more than 60,000 students per year.
